Supporting growth and new market expansion with advanced SMC press technology

The client: Taylor Engineering & Plastics
A longstanding leader in plastics manufacturing
Taylor Engineering & Plastics (TEP) is one of the UK’s most established, respected and versatile plastics manufacturers. They deliver complete, end-to-end manufacturing solutions for thermoplastic injection molding, thermoplastic structural foam molding, DCPD molding, decorative painting and finishing, RFI/EMI shielding coatings, low- to high-level assembly, and comprehensive tool design, manufacture, and maintenance. Serving OEM and Tier 1 customers across the automotive, industrial, and consumer sectors, they have built a strong reputation for technical capability, flexibility, and quality.
TEP’s relationship with Cannon spans almost five decades. This long-standing partnership continues with their latest investment in Cannon technology, reinforcing a shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and future-ready manufacturing.
The challenge
Scaling SMC capability for new market opportunities
To support new business opportunities and expand its SMC capability, TEP required a significant upgrade in press capacity and performance. The project demanded not only high-tonnage SMC presses, but also equipment engineered to integrate into a complex, high-throughput composite manufacturing environment.
From the outset, the project was conceived to deliver a solution with the lowest possible working height and maximum daylight, ensuring the presses would fit within specific ceiling and foundation pit constraints. These design objectives drove the development of our top pushing short stroke press, providing an optimal solution tailored to TEP’s requirements while also supporting efficient installation and future scalability.
Our solution
Delivering high-performance composite processing
We are supplying two 1200-ton SMC hydraulic presses, custom-engineered to meet TEP’s specific production requirements. Designed for demanding automotive and industrial applications, the presses combine high structural rigidity with precise platen parallelism, ensuring consistent part quality and repeatable molding conditions.
Advanced hydraulic control systems ensure accurate management over pressure, speed, and position throughout the molding cycle, while compatibility with automated SMC handling supports future integration of material loading, cutting, and transfer systems. Drawing on Cannon’s extensive expertise in turnkey SMC lines, the presses are designed for integrated composite production, with readiness for automation, process monitoring, and data connectivity to support more efficient manufacturing.
