pDCPD (Polydicyclopentadiene)

Polydicyclopentadiene (pDCPD) is a reactive thermoset polymer used to manufacture large, lightweight components that require outstanding impact resistance and long-term durability.
Processed through Reaction Injection Molding (RIM), or HP-RTM, DCPD combines the design freedom of plastics with the mechanical performance required by demanding industrial applications.

Its low-viscosity formulation enables fast mold filling, even for large or complex geometries, while the polymerization reaction produces parts with excellent structural integrity and dimensional stability.

Why choose pDCPD?

Compared with many conventional engineering materials, pDCPD offers a unique balance between mechanical performance and manufacturing efficiency.

Its excellent impact resistance makes it suitable for components exposed to demanding operating conditions, while its high stiffness and relatively low weight help manufacturers design robust yet lightweight parts.
The material also provides outstanding resistance to chemicals and corrosion, absorbs very little moisture and maintains excellent dimensional stability over time.

Thanks to its low-viscosity formulation, pDCPD can easily fill large or complex molds, enabling the production of oversized components with intricate geometries. Combined with its rapid polymerization, these characteristics allow manufacturers to achieve short production cycles without compromising part quality.

Unlike traditional thermoset, pDCPD is processed at relatively low molding pressures, making it possible to manufacture very large components using lighter and more cost-effective tooling.

Typical applications

Thanks to its mechanical strength and manufacturing flexibility, pDCPD is widely used for structural and semi-structural components in industries such as:

Typical parts include body panels, engine covers, fenders, access doors, tanks, protective housings, and other large molded components exposed to demanding operating conditions.

Processing pDCPD: why the equipment matters

Although the pDCPD process appears straightforward, consistent part quality depends on accurate control of every stage of production.

Because polymerization starts immediately after mixing, processing equipment must guarantee:

  • precise metering of both components
  • accurate mixing inside the mixing head
  • stable process parameters throughout production
  • repeatable shot-to-shot performance

Furthermore, we can provide presses that tilt or rotate to meet specific production requirements, together with custom molds and degassing systems. Tank farms complete the supply where dedicated chemical storage is needed.

Each element must work together to maintain stable parameters and repeatable results. Even small deviations can affect curing behavior, surface quality, or the mechanical properties of the finished component, particularly when manufacturing large parts or operating at high production volumes.
