Exploring new possibilities with the Proxxima™ resin system

Stronger reinforced composites with cutting-edge chemicals and machines

The client

Working together to move the industry forward

ExxonMobil, one of the world’s largest integrated energy and petrochemical companies, produces and delivers energy, fuels, lubricants and chemical products that support transportation, power, industry and consumer goods. The company creates solutions that improve quality of life and meet society’s evolving needs.

Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a leading organization for applied research in Germany. Founded in 1959, it focuses on applied research in chemical processes, polymer engineering, energy systems, and safety-related technologies. It works closely with industry and public partners to turn scientific research into practical, real-world solutions.

The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) is dedicated to strengthening manufacturing in the United States. They connect innovators with the partners needed to turn new ideas into reality, accelerating technology development and commercialization. Through its member network, IACMI advances R&D that reduces technical risk and strengthens the advanced composites supply chain.

The project

Their market edge

In 2023, ExxonMobil officially launched Proxxima™ resin systems, an advanced two-part polymer system developed with Nobel Prize-winning catalyst technology. In collaboration with Fraunhofer ICT, ExxonMobil is focused on using Proxxima™ resin systems with High-Pressure Resin Transfer Molding (HP-RTM) processes, production-scale demonstration tooling, and advanced simulation capability to develop lightweight, durable, and cost-effective composite parts, such as battery housings for electric mobility. And, at IACMI’s Scale-up Research Facility, ExxonMobil is working to improve overall HP-RTM manufacturing efficiency and reduce cycle times.

With long-standing experience and know-how for manufacturing equipment for DCPD and the HP-RTM process, Cannon was selected to provide the first dosing units and mixing heads for the ambitious project.

The challenge

Working with the Proxxima™ resin system

Using the Proxxima™ resin system, which works as a unique 50:1 ratio with the catalyst, calls for cutting-edge and newly developed equipment that enables it to reach its highest level of performance. Mixing this ratio at high pressure requires an extreme amount of accuracy and precision as the catalyst must be present exactly when needed — not a moment before or after.

The results

Turnkey technologies

Our A-Compact DCPD has once again proven to be an excellent choice. Customized to fit the DCPD specifications for processing Proxxima™ resin systems and equipped with an FPL SR mixing head, this system delivers pinpoint accuracy and precision in dosing and mixing 50:1 ratio.

The FPL SR, adapted to function as a 3-component system, utilizes our unique QCC injector to deliver the catalyst at the precise moment, greatly simplifying the processing stage and facilitating repeatability.
