From modular lines to advanced molds: efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability in seat production
Variable-cycle modular lines: built for flexibility and automation
Traditionally, a seating line is built around three elements: carousel, molds, and dosing system. Cannon has developed a new generation of variable-cycle lines, ideal for markets like Saudi Arabia, where flexibility and scalability are crucial.
At the heart are autonomous, motorized trolleys, independently powered and digitally monitored: using advanced readers, AI-driven logic, and integrated vision systems, the line continuously tracks trolley movements, verifies the correct positioning of inserts, and ensures real-time quality control. This enables dynamic cycle adjustments and intelligent routing according to production needs, while reducing human error and minimizing scrap.
This architecture provides unique advantages:
- Detachable flow: trolleys can exit the main line (for mold change, maintenance, or tooling adjustments) and rejoin without disrupting production.
- Adaptive capacity: the system works with both minimum and maximum trolley numbers, dynamically adjusting to cycle times; the gap can exceed 10 units.
- Scalable investment: manufacturers can start small and expand gradually.
- Automation & quality assurance: robots and cameras ensure consistent, repeatable operations with optimized labor.
Cannon’s new line represents not just an incremental step but a mature evolution of carousel technology — bringing efficiency, robustness, and flexibility to the next level.
Modular dosing unit: scalable, precise, and future-ready
The modular dosing unit is key. Each module includes a tank, pumps, and chemical temperature control. Operating independently with its own local control, modules can be added as capacity grows, with simple software adjustments required.
The result is a line that meets OEM requirements for scalability and reliability, but also for cycle times. Carousel, dosing system, robot, and the whole mechanics are conceived to grant a production cycle under 36 seconds per full seat set, enabling manufacturers to serve multiple customers with a single investment.
Mixing heads for performance and longevity
Our redesigned AX 22 mixing head delivers speed, durability, and precision. An automatic throttle of the cleanout piston ensures faster operation and accurate mixing across varying flow rates, while a hydraulic partializer optimizes the opening of the cleanout piston, guaranteeing perfect mixing even at low throughput. Capable of processing up to six components, it features ON/OFF or ReCo injectors for precise selection and pressure control, along with high-performance hydraulic selectors for a formulation switching in just 0.7 seconds, reducing waste and enabling true production agility.
For producers, this means longer equipment life, lower downtime, and consistent output quality across multiple seat programs.
NEXUS composite mold: Energy-efficient innovation
Significant savings also come from mold heating. Through the NEXUS project, Cannon developed a composite mold with an advanced thermoregulation system. Compared with aluminum molds, the results are transformative:
● Save up to 90% energy saving during production
● Reduce mold weight up to 85%
● Cut ramp-up time from two hours to just ten minutes
Considering that a single plant may operate 32 or more molds simultaneously, the potential for reducing operating costs and environmental impact is enormous. While developed with seating applications in mind, these molds can be applied to any polyurethane process.
Cannon technologies enable seat cushion producers to achieve faster cycles, lower costs, and greater sustainability.
